MAKHDOOM AMIN FAHIM: “his presence brings good harvests”
After the assassination of Ms. Benazir Bhutto and the boycott of the elections by Imran Khan and the on again, off again, on again, off again boycott of the election by Tubelight Nawaz Sharif, all indications are that Mr. Makhdoom Amin Fahim (مخدوم امین فہیم ) will be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The other contenders are Ahtizaz Ahsan and many others. Hussain Haqqani may the Foreign Minister.
Mr. Zardari is not a member of parliament and Ms. Benazir Bhutto because BB did not allow him to file any nominating papers. Till last week Mr. Fahim was the Vice-Chairman of the PPPP and according the will of Ms. Benzir Bhutto her chosen successor for the position of Prime Minister if the PPP wins a parliamentary majority in the next elections of Pakistan.
Rupee News predicted a PPP victory in December 2007. The PPP won a majority of the votes in the elections. As such Fahim will become the Prime Minister under President Pervez Musharraf.
CHALLENGES: His Peoples Party will be running on the agenda of the 5Es as opposed to Mr. Nawaz Sharif’s 5Ds. Mr. Fahim has to bring the party together and has to bring a nation together to . If he can build a Government of National Consensus .He may lead the country back to economic progress. He has to get along with President Musharraf and Mr. Zardari.
EARLY LIFE: He was born 200 Kilometers from Karachi in the Makhdoom family of Hala, on August 4, 1939 His father Makhdoom Talib-ul-Maula, along with Mubbashir Hasan, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was one of the founding members of the PPP (1969)
EDUCATION: Fahim Matriculation in 1955 and completed his BA in political science at Sindh University, in 1961.
COOL CALM AND COLLECTED: Mr. Fahim is a demure sober and seasoned politician. Known as a humble politician, Fahim entered in the political arena in 1970 when he was elected as member National Assembly from southern Thatta district of Sindh province. He is an agriculturist by profession, Makhdoom Amin Fahim has a BAis married and has traveled to Brazil, Chile, Europe, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, U.S.A and the Middle East. Fahim has so far contested seven elections in 1977, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, and 2002 and remained undefeated. Fahim boycotted the non-party elections of 1985 held by General Zia-ul-Haq – led military regime in line with the decision of his party. Fahim was offered the post of prime minister in 2002 by General Pervez Musharraf keeping Benazir’s refusal to appoint Fahim as Chief Minister of Sindh province
after 1993 elections in mind.
CRITICISM: Fahim has been criticized in Pakistan. He is a feudal landlord and leader in “socialist” social democratic party. He is a Sufi and a self-admitted alcohol drinker. Tariq Ali in his book “Clash of Fundamentalism”, page 261) says that .Fahim’s sisters have allegedly been forced to “marry the Quran” (instead of non-related men), to prevent the family’s massive land holdings from being split up.The Makhdoom family denies that charge.
INTERESTS: Fahim was more interested in poetry than politics. “Poetry is my first love. I am still fond of saying verses and reading poetry of others,” Fahim says. His forte is mystic poetry. His poetry speaks about love, peace, and simplicity.
“I have always been fond of the poetry of Maulana Rumi, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, and Sachal Sarmast. Their poetry has left a deep impact on my life. I have learnt from them (poets) to be loyal to your loved ones in good or rainy days,” he says.”I don’t believe in ruling the people. I believe in ruling their hearts. That is why my voters love me, and they never disappointed me,” he opines.
